India’s Permanent UNSC Seat Bid Gets Major European Support!
India’s campaign for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) received fresh backing from four Central European nations—Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, collectively known as the Visegrad Group or V4.
The announcement came during the first V4+India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York. Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár said the four V4 countries support India having a permanent place at the UN Security Council.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar described the meeting as a new historic occasion and announced closer cooperation between India and the V4 countries, including annual meetings of foreign ministers and an Annual Business Forum.
The partnership will also focus on technology and innovation, research and education, defence cooperation, space, connectivity and people-to-people relations.
But what does this support actually mean for India’s permanent UNSC membership? What is the Visegrad Group (V4)? Why does India want a permanent seat at the UN Security Council? What is the role of the P5 and veto power? And why is UNSC reform so difficult?
The UN Security Council currently has 15 members—5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members. Any fundamental change to the UN Charter requires the procedure laid down under Article 108, making UNSC reform a complex diplomatic process.
