Cada vez más personas tras su muerte no desean ser cremadas ni sepultadas. Quieren que sus cuerpos vuelvan a ser tierra fértil. Un desafío tanto ético como legal.En Europa, ciudadanos comprometidos luchan por investigar científicamente, validar y legalizar lo que se denomina "humusación", es decir, el compostaje de restos humanos. En Estados Unidos, esta alternativa a la cremación y al entierro tradicional ya se practica en algunos estados. La idea resulta radical culturalmente, pero se basa en un proceso natural: la descomposición aeróbica, tal como la naturaleza la ha ejecutado durante millones de años.
Poco a poco se consolida un movimiento que durante mucho tiempo fue considerado marginal y polémico. Sus pioneros rompen tabúes, despiertan la conciencia ecológica y desafían a la industria funeraria. A través de lo que llaman "volver a la tierra", proponen una comprensión diferente de la muerte —como parte de un ciclo que renueva la vida— y abren así el camino a nuevos rituales de duelo.
