Un académico e historiador residente en la isla considera que las autoridades locales están reaccionando de forma excesiva."Creo que el Consejo de Asuntos del Continente está reaccionando de forma exagerada. También sabemos que Cheng Li-wun, durante los últimos cinco meses, ha reiterado en Taiwan que somos chinos; que nos oponemos a las fuerzas separatistas y que apoyamos el Consenso de 1992, que encarna el principio de una sola China. Cheng también cita hechos, como que la comunidad internacional reconoce este principio. En realidad, sus declaraciones representan la voz del pueblo de Taiwan.
