🇭🇺 Hungary - President Addresses United Nations General Debate, 78th Session | #UNGA

Her Excellency Katalin Novák, President of Hungary, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023).

Katalin Éva Novák, President of Hungary, said, “A large part of the world is facing, in addition to war, a difficulty that is oppressing it from within. In Europe and in many of your countries, the demographic winter has turned into an ice age.”

Addressing the General Assembly today (19 Sep), Novák said that if unaddressed, the worldwide decline in birthrates will have an immeasurable impact on our economies, societies, and security in the near future.

She continued, “Elon Musk may be right when he says that demographic decline is a more serious problem than the climate crisis. Little attention is paid to the real and irreversible change of the world. If there is no child, there will be no future. What is the point of looking after the Earth if we don't have children and grandchildren to pass it on to?”

According to Novák, Hungarians see the solution to the demographic crisis in strengthening and supporting families.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, she emphasized that there are 150,000 Hungarians living in Transcarpathia.

She concluded, “This war also directly affects us Hungarians. It is not just in our neighborhood. Hungarian fathers and sons living in Ukraine are also giving their lives in the trenches. Thus, we want peace. In our country, in Ukraine, in Europe, in the world. Peace and the security that comes with it.”

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.

The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.

But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.
