How Are Americans Affording $80,000 Trucks on $70,000 Salary

How are Americans buying $80,000 trucks on a $70,000 salary? The short answer is many of them can’t actually afford them.

New vehicle prices have surged since 2019, with the average full-size truck now costing around $65,000. At the same time, nearly 1 in 5 new auto loans carries a monthly payment above $1,000. Dealers found a way to make those prices look manageable. Stretch the loan.
72- and 84-month financing can dramatically lower the monthly payment while keeping borrowers locked into debt for six or seven years. The trade-off is thousands of dollars in additional interest while the vehicle rapidly loses value. That creates another problem. Negative equity.
Millions of drivers now owe more than their cars are worth. When they trade in, default, or have the vehicle repossessed, the remaining debt doesn’t necessarily disappear. And repossessions are already surging. More than 1.7 million vehicles were repossessed in 2024, while delinquency rates among subprime borrowers continue to climb. Behind it all is a much larger financial machine. Banks package thousands of auto loans into asset-backed securities and sell them to investors, turning consumer debt into a Wall Street product. It sounds uncomfortably familiar.

Americans aren’t suddenly rich enough to afford $80,000 trucks. They’ve simply been given longer and more complicated ways to finance them.
