India’s Gold Reserves Are Turning Into a Goldmine for Lenders | Vantage on Firstpost | 4K
Ten years after its launch, India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has transformed digital payments, surging from just 1.78 crore transactions in 2016–17 to over 24,162 crore in 2025–26. Today, UPI accounts for nearly 49% of global real-time payment volumes and operates across 11 countries, making India’s Digital Public Infrastructure a global model.At the same time, India’s gold-loan market is booming. RBI data shows NBFC lending against gold jewellery rose 69.3% year-on-year in June 2026. Lenders are increasingly targeting household gold because these loans are cheaper than many unsecured loans and backed by valuable collateral. With gold loans now funding education, healthcare and small businesses, JPMorgan estimates they could rise to around 10% of India’s system credit within five years, from about 5% today.
