Auf das Thema angesprochen, sagte er am Mittwoch während des Nato-Gipfels in Den Haag, er unterstütze den Artikel 5, wonach ein Angriff auf ein Mitglied der Allianz ein Angriff auf alle ist. «Ich stehe dazu, deshalb bin ich hier», sagte Trump bei seinem Treffen mit dem niederländischen Ministerpräsidenten Dick Schoof. «Wenn ich nicht dazu stehen würde, wäre ich nicht hier.»
Auf dem Weg zum Gipfeltreffen am Dienstag klang der US-Präsident noch weit weniger entschlossen. Auf die Frage, ob er sich an Artikel 5 des Nordatlantikvertrags halten werde, gab er an Bord der Air Force One keine direkte Antwort. Das hänge von der Definition ab, sagte er lediglich. Er wolle jedoch ein Freund sein. Die Bemerkung sorgte für Unsicherheit unter Mitgliedern der Nato.
