Iran’s new Hormuz shipping rules fuel uncertainty, analyst says

Iranian news agencies have published a map of the Strait of Hormuz showing a circled "Area of Danger," with the IRGC Navy warning that ships must coordinate with them to avoid naval mines — warning that tankers are now being told to take a more northerly route closer to the Iranian coast, passing either side of the heavily guarded Larak Island used by the IRGC to monitor ship traffic.
C. Uday Bhaskar, maritime security specialist and director of the Society for Policy Studies in New Delhi , told Al Jazeera that the current situation in the strait is "very, very uneasy," with only a handful of ships — around three to five — having transited since the ceasefire was announced, compared to normal traffic of 130 to 140 ships.
Bhaskar noted that the IRGC is charging "anything up to $2 million, which seems to be ad hoc per ship," and warned that ship owners would take Iran's mine warnings "very seriously" given the value of vessels.
He explained that prior to the war, both Iran and Oman had joint responsibility for the strait, but Iran is now imposing new conditions which Oman has not yet accepted, with Oman reportedly not subscribing to the Iranian proposal to impose a toll.
Bhaskar added that more clarity is expected after the talks in Islamabad on Friday, 10 April.
