Why the BrahMos Remains the World's Deadliest Supersonic Missile | From The Frontline
The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is one of the most lethal weapons in the world. Jointly developed by India and Russia, the weapon derives its name from two rivers, India's Brahmaputra and Russia's Moskva. When the missile's concept was announced, it was meant to defeat the American subsonic cruise missile Tomahawk, which had proved its combat worthiness during the first Gulf War. However, Indian scientists along with their Russian counterparts realised that having a supersonic cruise missile would give them the edge. Thus the BrahMos was designed to have a ramjet engine that draws in oxygen from the surrounding, mixes it with the fuel and keeps the missile soaring at speeds of Mach 3 or three times the speed of sound until the end. Combine this with the missiles' evasive maneuvers, it makes the missile can't be intercepted. The BrahMos is also unique in another sense, it is the only supersonic cruise missile in the world that can be launched from land, air, sea and underwater. That is how the missile did serious damage to Pakistan and its airbases, when Pakistan Air Force's Chinese radars were unable to detect BrahMos launches fired by the Indian Air Force's SU-30 MKI.
