Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun kurucu hanedanı 600 yıldan uzun süre devletin yönetimindeydi.Büyük toprak kayıpları yaşanarak 1918'de kaybedilen Birinci Dünya Savaşı'nın ardından imparatorluk çökmüş, Milli Mücadele'nin liderlerinin 23 Nisan 1920'de kurduğu Büyük Millet Meclisi, 1 Kasım 1922'de saltanatın kaldırılmasına karar vermişti.
Ardından 3 Mart 1924'te halifelik kaldırıldı, Osmanlı hanedanının sürgün edilmesine karar verildi.
150'den fazla kişi Türkiye'yi terk etti.Kadınlar için 1952'de erkekler için 1974'te Türkiye’ye dönüş izni verildi.
1924'te ülkeden ayrılan Osmanlı hanedan üyelerinin torunları bugün hayatta.
Türkiye dahil, farklı ülkelerde bambaşka hayatlar yaşıyorlar.
