Taiwan’s president has struck a defiant tone after China launched fresh military drills near the island.In a New Year’s Day speech, Lai Ching-te said 2026 would be a critical year and vowed to defend Taiwan’s sovereignty.
He warned China aims to be ready to attack by 2027, though its success is uncertain.
Beijing responded by insisting Taiwan is part of China and independence is inevitable.
Taiwan is accelerating its military build-up and civilian defence training.
Lawmakers say preparations make a Chinese takeover difficult.
The drills highlight growing risks of rapid escalation in the Taiwan Strait.
