My Government Told Me NOT to Come Here… So I Did!
I was told NOT to come here. I'm driving through one of Pakistan's most dangerous kidnapping regions, where armed bandits operate and both the UK and New Zealand governments warn against travelling here. But I'm about to drive straight through it, stopping at restaurants, petrol stations, markets and even a hotel along the way.Instead of simply driving through, I wanted to see what this region is actually like.
So I got in a car with a local driver who speaks Sindhi and knows the roads, and drove through what I call Pakistan's "kidnapping highway" on the way to Larkana and, eventually, Mohenjo Daro.
Along the way, I explain why this region has such a dangerous reputation, how kidnappings have affected the area, why police escorts have been used on the highway, and some of the precautions I took while travelling through Sindh past Nawabshah.
But then something surprising happens.
Despite everything I'd just told you about the risks, we actually start stopping.
We stop at a roadside restaurant, where I discover Pakistan has separate men's and women's dining areas and even a "foreigner menu". We stop at a petrol station and I give you a look around, discover a small market operating behind the station, meet some of the local people and try to find a cold Sting.
We also stop for CNG, pass police patrols, see shepherds, buffaloes and hitchhikers along the highway, and eventually make our way into Larkana.
Larkana is closely associated with the Bhutto family, and I drive through the city seeing the universities, hospitals, High Court and other landmarks before checking into a large local hotel.
And yes... there's even a guy with a shotgun guarding the hotel.
The hotel itself costs just Rs. 9,000 (around $32 USD), and the best part is that the police headquarters are literally across the road.
This journey is also taking me towards one of the most important archaeological sites in Pakistan: Mohenjo Daro, the ancient city of the Indus Valley Civilisation. I've already travelled throughout India and across Pakistan, and Sindh was the final province of Pakistan I wanted to explore. In the next video, I'll finally visit the 5,000-year-old city of Mohenjo Daro.
This isn't a guide telling you that northern Sindh is "safe". There are real security concerns here, and I would not recommend copying my journey without understanding the risks and getting appropriate local advice. I'm simply showing you what I experienced travelling through this part of Pakistan and what everyday life looked like along the route.
