Dr Jayasree A K is a Gender Activist, Professor and HOD Government Medical College Kannur. She is the mother of Actor Kani Kusruti. Dr Jayasree has partnered with Maitreya Maitreyan for years both at work and her personal space. Dr Jayasree has worked in the area of community medicine and has closely worked with sex workers.She has actively contributed to the feminist discourse in Kerala; she has unwaveringly questioned Patriarchy and patriarchal notions in Kerala. She is also an author of the book Ezhukon which is autobiographical in nature. She has contributed immensely to the understanding of female sexuality, sexual expression and spreading awareness on female sexual health.
In this conversation we talk about her relationship with Maitreyan which was unique and set outside societal sanctions. She talks about parenting and how she sees her relationship with Maitreya Maitreyan. She talks about Kani Kusruti her daughters. In the later part of the conversation we talk about female desire and sexuality, the idea of consent, life of sex workers and how patriarchal norms affect women in society and within marriages. We try and understand how the commercialization of perimenopause and menopause has happened and the myths that exist in society regarding the same.
