Standing in the Gap | Sammy Davis | TEDxWatkins Glen
Few people have stood where Sammy stands. The youngest of twelve, raised on a migrant farm, he grew up on the side of the line that often fears the badge, then spent his career wearing it. He has worn that badge, and he has sat across from the people who fear it. That vantage point is the heart of his talk, "Standing in the Gap."His message runs against the story most people tell about policing and community. The breakdown does not come from two sides who don't care. It comes from two sides who both want trust and don't believe the other side wants it too. Sammy's claim, earned from the middle: the distance between them is smaller than either side thinks, and it closes in the moments no one is watching, not in the press conferences or public apologies everyone assumes do the work.
He does not argue a side. He reports what he sees from a place almost no one else occupies. His audiences leave seeing the gap differently, and seeing their own part in closing it. Sammy Davis has spent more than 20 years in law enforcement and nearly 10 teaching leaders how to build trust in places where it has worn thin.
He is the Undersheriff of Broome County and a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session 292, a distinction earned by fewer than 1% of law enforcement professionals worldwide. He is a Certified Master Instructor and Facilitator and the co-founder of D5 Consulting Group, where he trains police, public safety teams, school administrators, and corporate leaders in leadership and de-escalation. As Vice President of Unity in Action, he works on the ground between community and police, in the exact space where the two either trust each other or don't. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
