Di hari itu, Pakubuwana XII mangkat setelah memimpin selama 59 tahun sebagai Susuhunan.
Namun, kepergiannya meninggalkan kekosongan takhta yang memicu konflik internal.
Selama masa hidupnya, Pakubuwana XII tidak pernah mengangkat permaisuri maupun menunjuk putra mahkota.
Akibatnya, usai beliau mangkat, dua putranya yaitu KGPH Hangabehi dan KGPH Tedjowulan saling mengklaim sebagai penerus sah.
Keduanya menyebut diri sebagai Pakubuwana XIII.
Konflik pun tak terhindarkan.
Pada 10 September 2004, KGPH Hangabehi diangkat sebagai Pakubuwana XIII.
Namun, kericuhan masih terus berlanjut.
Tedjowulan dan para pendukungnya sempat menyerbu dan mendobrak Keraton Surakarta.
Perseteruan ini mencoreng citra keraton dan memecah keluarga kerajaan.
Mangkatnya Pakubuwono XII meninggalkan kekosongan kepemimpinan dan ketidakjelasan siapa yang akan menggantikannya sebagai pemimpin Keraton Surakarta
Delapan tahun kemudian, upaya damai akhirnya tercapai.
Pada 4 Juni 2012, rekonsiliasi ditandatangani oleh Hangabehi dan Tedjowulan di Gedung Parlemen Senayan, Jakarta.
Kesepakatan ini disaksikan langsung oleh Ketua DPR RI, sejumlah menteri, Gubernur Jawa Tengah, dan Wali Kota Surakarta saat itu, Joko Widodo.
Kini, kilas balik ini menjadi pengingat.
Bahwa di balik kebesaran budaya Keraton Surakarta, pernah tersimpan cerita kelam soal perebutan takhta yang nyaris meruntuhkan warisan sejarah.
