Hundreds of mourners gathered in Uruapan, Michoacan, on Sunday (November 2) for the funeral of a local mayor, Carlos Manzo, who was gunned down during Day of the Dead celebrations.Family, friends, and municipal police stood guard around his coffin, draped in the Mexican flag, as residents shouted demands for justice and immediate government intervention. Grecia Quiroz, Manzo’s widow, vowed to continue his legacy and work for the city’s future.
The killing, which occurred in front of children and families in middle of a public celebration, has deepened fears and frustration in Uruapan, a city plagued by cartel violence and a lack of effective government response.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum promised on Sunday that there would be justice for the brazen murder of Manzo, an outspoken critic of organized crime who had called on the government to do more to protect him and others.
Two suspects were arrested and a third was dead, Mexico's security ministry said on Saturday (November 1).
One of the few independent politicians elected to office in Mexico, Manzo had been Uruapan's mayor since September 2024. Since taking office, Manzo, often seen wearing a bulletproof vest, had called on the federal government to do more to fight organized crime while expressing fears for his own safety.
Michoacan has seen a surge in violence against local officials, with dozens of mayors and public figures targeted in recent years.
