Congressman Ted Lieu, one of three Computer Science Majors in Congress, makes the case for strong regulation of AI, calling it "insane" to not do so as soon as possible.

He takes us back to the 1930s, before any real regulation of the pharmaceutical industry, and reminds us that it took anti-freeze being added to an elixir - and killing over 100 people - to get Congress to pass a bill to make that industry safe.

In this important TED Talk, the Congressman calls on his colleagues in Congress to take a "proactive approach" to avoid three kinds of even more urgent AI dangers: 1) AI that can destroy the world, 2) AI that can kill individuals and 3) AI that can cause a large number of other significant kinds of harm. Ted W. Lieu represents California's 36th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives.

Ted is serving in his sixth term in Congress and currently sits on the House Judiciary and Foreign Affairs Committees. He was also re-elected by his colleagues to serve as Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, making him the highest ranking Asian American to have ever served in House Leadership.

In the 118th Congress, Congressman Lieu was the Co-Chair of the House's Bipartisan Taskforce on Artificial Intelligence. He is a Veteran, having served on active duty and then in the Reserve for the Air Force, retiring from the Reserve in 2021 with the rank of Colonel. He is one of only three Computer Science majors in Congress. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
