Minnesota state officials on Wednesday urged the public to remain calm after a federal immigration agent shot and killed a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis, quickly sparking protests in the city.Gov. Tim Walz described the shooting as "totally avoidable" and urged people to demonstrate peacefully, recalling the protests in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, which occurred just blocks from where the federal agent opened fire.
"To Minnesotans I say this: I feel your anger. I'm angry," Walz said at a news conference hours after the shooting. "They want a show. We can't give it to them."
The Department of Homeland Security said an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent "fired defensive shots" after a woman attempted to ram officials with her SUV.
