When faced with gallbladder surgery, most people are told there’s no other option, and the side effects of gallbladder removal aren’t always properly explained.

The gallbladder is a small sac that stores and concentrates bile, releasing it when you eat to help break down fat. Bile is produced by the liver and is critical for proper nutrient absorption.

Gallbladder stones are one of the main reasons for a cholecystectomy. Gallstones typically form from the crystallization of excess cholesterol. Bile sludge is a precursor to gallstones.

Fat consumption triggers gallbladder contraction and bile release. Low-fat diets are often recommended, but they are not always the best approach for digestive health.

Excess estrogen can increase the risk of gallstones. Insulin resistance can also increase the risk and is often at the root of many gallbladder problems.

The full side effects that can occur after gallbladder removal surgery aren’t always discussed. After gallbladder removal, many people experience problems related to either excess bile or bile deficiency.

Choline is essential for helping prevent gallstones, yet many people don’t get enough. Eggs are one of the best sources of choline.
