Every day, over 70 lakh people rely on Mumbai’s local trains, not by choice but because they have no alternative. Trains are packed beyond capacity, stations are crumbling, and even basic facilities like clean water and working toilets are hard to find. In the last 20 years, over 51,000 people have died just trying to commute. And this isn’t just Mumbai. Across India, public transport is overcrowded, unsafe, and neglected while governments pour billions into highways and flyovers. The result? More cars, worse traffic, and a system that continues to fail those who need it the most. Why does India keep ignoring its public transport crisis instead of fixing it?
