Where the sun sets, voices rise | Angel Cheng | TEDxBIBA Youth

In this heartfelt TEDx‑style talk, Angel explores how Brain‑Computer Interfaces (BCI) can restore connection for older adults whose bodies have silenced their voices. Drawing on personal family experience with her great-grandmother and the reality of global ageing populations, Angel unpacks real‑world BCI breakthroughs both internationally and within China. She paints a hopeful vision: using thought‑controlled technology, AI and humanoid robotics to give speech, independence and dignity back to elders living with stroke, injury or cognitive decline. This speech is not about futuristic gadgets — it is about preserving human‑to‑human love and connection, even when words can no longer be spoken. Angel Cheng is a sixth-grade IB learner with a huge heart and an even stronger sense of justice. She cares deeply about people whose voices are often overlooked—especially elderly individuals who have faced hardships early in life. Since she was young, she has believed that every story matters, and that no voice should go unheard.

Her journey across writing, mathematics, and the arts—including becoming a Global Champion in Writing and a recipient of the 2025–2028 BIBA Scholarship—has shaped how she understands expression. Through piano, ballet, and theatre, she has learned that emotion often goes beyond words.

These experiences led her to a bigger question: what if we could listen better—not just with our ears, but with technology? Inspired by innovations like brain-computer interfaces, Angel explores how we might bridge human thoughts and communication.

This belief—and this question—is what brings her to the TEDx stage today. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
