An object’s average velocity over some interval is the object’s change in position (displacement) divided by the time interval over which that displacement occurs. Taking the limit of this quotient as the time interval goes to zero gives the object’s instantaneous velocity at some time, which is the derivative of position with respect to time. An object’s average acceleration over some interval is the object’s change in velocity divided by the time interval over which that change in velocity occurs. Taking the limit of this quotient as the time interval goes to zero gives the object’s instantaneous acceleration at some time, which is the derivative of velocity with respect to time.
