Project Hail Mary was shot without a single green screen. Here's how Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and cinematographer Greig Fraser pulled off a sci-fi epic with practical effects — and why it looks more real than the competition.

Project Hail Mary was one of the surprise hits of 2026, and not just for its story. Lord and Miller wanted a space movie built with as many practical effects as possible. As Miller put it: "Not a single green or blue screen was used."

In this episode of How They Shot It, we go behind the scenes of Project Hail Mary's cinematography and practical effects. Greig Fraser filled the soundstage with practical lighting, including pixel-mapped tungsten rigs that shifted color temperature with the time of day and Creamsource Vortex LEDs programmed to mimic a moving sun inside the spinning centrifuge.

We also break down how Rocky was made — a blend of on-set puppetry and VFX that gave Ryan Gosling a real scene partner. Then we look at Fraser's in-camera effects: two ARRI Alexa 65 cameras (one converted to shoot infrared), a cage of infrared lights invisible to the naked eye, and water running between sheets of glass. Finally, we unpack the "Scooby-Doo Effect" — a mis-timed shutter on an ARRI 435 that created the film's timeline transitions.

Practical effects aren't easy or cheap — but they ground the story so it can reach new heights.
