Laut Vatikan geht es dem 88-Jährigen „von Tag zu Tag besser“. Der Pontifex sei inzwischen fieberfrei, und seine Blutwerte seien stabil. Dennoch bleibt er vorerst unter medizinischer Beobachtung im Krankenhaus. Die Behandlung gestaltet sich aufgrund mehrerer Keime kompliziert, zudem ist seine Lunge bereits seit seiner Jugend vorgeschädigt: Damals musste ihm ein Teil eines Lungenflügels entfernt werden. Trotz der Herausforderungen zeigt sich der Vatikan optimistisch hinsichtlich seiner Genesung.
