Practicing for a multiple choice exam by only doing multiple choice questions can give you a false sense of confidence. Your brain starts recognizing the right answer instead of producing it, and the real exam fills the options with answers that differ by a single word.

In this workshop recording, I walk through how to prepare for each major exam format, using Bloom’s taxonomy to show which level of thinking each one tests. I explain why most traditional methods only reach the “remember” and “understand” levels, and how to build in apply, analyze and evaluate. For maths and formula-based exams, I cover why you should write out every formula from memory before you practice. For oral exams, I explain how speaking at around 150 words per minute, compared with 60 to 70 typing and 20 to 30 handwriting, lets you get more feedback reps. For multiple choice, I cover answering before you look at the options, then justifying why each wrong answer is wrong. For essays and short answers, I cover doing the longest questions first, reading the question before the text, and answering every part of a two-part question.

I also take questions on standardized tests like the GRE and GMAT, whether to go back over your multiple choice answers if you finish early, and how to use a blank formula sheet in a proctored exam.

Practice the way you’ll be tested, and then make it a bit harder.
