Scientists analysing ancient human remains from Tamil Nadu have uncovered new genetic evidence connecting Sangam era communities with present day South Indian, Sri Lankan Tamil and wider South Asian populations. Researchers extracted tens of thousands of DNA markers from remains discovered at Konthagai near Keeladi, alongside samples from Adichanallur and Sivagalai. The findings add a powerful genetic dimension to archaeological discoveries of urban settlements, iron technology, agriculture and everyday life in ancient Tamil society. Scientists are also combining DNA, proteins, pottery residues and Sangam literature to reconstruct what these communities ate, cultivated and produced.
