Negeri ini memiliki wilayah yang sempit namun kaya akan sumber daya minyak bumi.
Sejarah peradaban Kuwait bisa ditelusuri sejak zaman Mesopotamia kuno pada Abad ke-3.
Hal ini diperkuat dengan temuan bukti artefak dari pada masa itu.
Kuwait sendiri pada abad pertengahan bukan merupakan wilayah yang cukup diperhitungkan, negara ini sempat jatuh ke tangan Kesulatanan Turki Usmani pada Abad ke-19.
Namun, konflik internal di tubuh Kesultanan Turki Usmani menyebabkan Inggris mulai memperkuat pengaruhnya di Kuwait.
Pada 1897 Kuwait resmi menjadi Protektorat Inggris.
Penemuan minyak bumi pada 1930 menyebabkan perubahan drastis pada Kuwait, tingkat kesejahteraan rakyat pun bertambah akibat penemuan minyak tersebut.
Pada 19 Juni 1961 Kuwait resmi mederka dari Britania Raya.
Tak lagi menjadi protektorat, Kuwait memulai langkahnya sebagai negara berdaulat, dengan kedaulatan penuh di tangan rakyat dan pemerintahnya.
Namun, kemerdekaan itu tidak datang tanpa tantangan.
Hanya beberapa hari setelah merdeka, ancaman datang dari Irak yang mengklaim Kuwait sebagai bagian dari wilayahnya.
Tapi Kuwait tak gentar.
Dengan diplomasi dan bantuan dari negara-negara Arab dan Inggris, Kuwait berhasil mempertahankan kemerdekaannya.
