'700+ Dragged & Detained': Delhi’s Jantar Mantar Descends Into Chaos | 'CEC Gyanesh Must Go' Stir
More than 700 protesters were detained in Delhi as AAP leaders, student organisations and members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) took part in demonstrations linked to demands for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The protests in and around Jantar Mantar centred on allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and claims of voter deletions, which remain allegations by protesters and are not a finding by the Election Commission or a court. AAP leaders including Atishi, Saurabh Bharadwaj, Sanjeev Jha and Sanjay Singh were among those detained, while student activists from AISA, SFI and NSUI were also stopped or detained. Heavy security, barricades and restrictions around central Delhi were imposed as the demonstrations unfolded on October 2, with the wider CJP-led protest movement also drawing attention in Mumbai and other parts of India.---
