Hundreds of officers from DR Congo’s police have switched their allegiance to the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels. Reports suggest that around 1800 police officers have surrendered in Bukavu, while 500 more are reportedly joining the rebels. In Bukavu, which is the capital of South Kivu province, rebels told the recruits that they would be sent for retraining to Goma. Meanwhile. DR Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi said he would launch a unity government. Reports indicate that Tshisekedi would also make changes in the leadership of the coalition. This comes as M23 continued its advances in the eastern provinces. The international community is also raising concerns over M23’s advances. Will the international community’s demands spur action or will the conflict continue to escalate, dragging the region further into chaos? Watch this report for more details.
