39-year-old Rick Mahorn Drops a Casual 8-Spot on the Warriors (1998)

January 9, 1998 - Honestly, it's kinda wild that Rick Mahorn played NBA basketball until he was 40. This was a dude who was left unprotected in the 1989 Expansion Draft in part due to a back condition that seemed to suggest his career would be coming to a premature conclusion. And sure enough, he was indeed out of the league by 1992. But then, like Jordan (but before Jordan), he came back! Rick played seven(!!!) more seasons in the NBA after initially stepping away, and never once during that stretch did he average more than 3.9 points and 3.8 rebounds. Undoubtedly, there's something to be said about Mahorn's indelible veteran presence somewhere in there.

In 1998, Mahorn served in his biggest on-court role since '93, playing 12 minutes a night for a Grant Hill-led Pistons unit. His eight points in a blowout win over the Warriors served as his season-high until he dropped 10 a month later, the last double-digit performance of his career.
