Kecelakaan itu menewaskan 241 orang dan hanya menyisakan satu penumpang selamat.
Pilot Sabharwal, berusia 56 tahun, tercatat memiliki lebih dari 15.000 jam terbang.
Namun, catatan kesehatannya menjadi perhatian penyidik setelah muncul laporan mengenai kondisi mentalnya.
Menurut laporan New York Post yang dikutip Senin, (14/7/2025), Sabharwal pernah mengambil cuti medis karena diduga mengalami depresi.
Sejumlah rekan pilot menyebut ia sempat tidak aktif terbang dalam tiga hingga empat tahun terakhir.
Ia juga dilaporkan mengambil cuti tambahan setelah ibunya meninggal dunia pada 2022 dan mempertimbangkan pensiun lebih awal demi merawat sang ayah.
Meski begitu, ia dinyatakan layak terbang kembali setelah pemeriksaan medis pada September 2024.
Pakar keselamatan penerbangan India, Mohan Ranganathan, menyatakan Sabharwal telah mendapatkan izin resmi dari dokter perusahaan Air India sebelum kembali bertugas.
Laporan awal penyelidikan menunjukkan bahwa saklar pemutus bahan bakar mesin jet sempat aktif hanya tiga detik setelah pesawat lepas landas.
Namun, penyebab pasti masih belum diketahui.
Rekaman suara kokpit dan data dari dua kotak hitam kini sedang dianalisis untuk mengetahui kronologi kejadian.
