This video is about:
Mercury is the smallest planet in our Solar System and the closest planet to the Sun, yet it has one of the most unusual features ever observed around a rocky planet—a giant tail stretching away from it. This tail can make Mercury look almost like a comet, but it is not made primarily of the dust and ice associated with comet tails. One of its most prominent components is sodium. Sodium atoms released from Mercury’s surface enter its extremely thin exosphere, and sunlight—along with other processes in Mercury’s harsh space environment—helps produce an extended sodium tail pointing generally away from the Sun.
Mercury has been known to humans since ancient times because it is bright enough to be seen without a telescope. Its rapid movement across the sky led ancient civilizations to recognize it as a wandering object, or planet. For centuries, however, observing Mercury in detail was extremely difficult because it always appears relatively close to the Sun in our sky. Modern spacecraft finally transformed our understanding of the planet. NASA’s Mariner 10 provided the first close-up views in the 1970s, while the MESSENGER mission later orbited Mercury and mapped its surface, composition, magnetic field and geological history in unprecedented detail.
Those observations also revealed that Mercury has been shrinking. The planet possesses an unusually large metallic core, and as Mercury has cooled over billions of years, its interior has contracted. The solid outer crust has had to adjust to the decreasing volume beneath it, producing enormous thrust faults and cliff-like landforms called lobate scarps across the surface. Measurements of these structures indicate that Mercury’s radius has decreased by several kilometres during its geological history. In other words, Mercury is not suddenly disappearing; it has been undergoing extremely slow planetary contraction over immense periods of time.
In this video, we explore how Mercury developed its extraordinary sodium tail, how humans went from observing a mysterious fast-moving point of light to sending spacecraft around it, and what the giant scars across its surface reveal about a planet that is still contracting today. Mercury may be the smallest planet in the Solar System, but its sodium exosphere, oversized core and shrinking surface make it one of the most fascinating natural laboratories for understanding how rocky planets evolve.
