A US jury in Los Angeles has found Meta and Google liable for harming a young user through the design of their platforms. The case centred on a 20-year-old woman who said prolonged use of Instagram and YouTube led to addiction, depression and suicidal thoughts. The court ruled that features such as infinite scrolling, auto-play and notifications contributed to compulsive use. The companies were ordered to pay 6 million dollars in damages, with Meta covering 70 per cent. Both firms have rejected the verdict and will appeal. The ruling comes as more than 2,000 similar lawsuits are pending in the United States.---
