Led by Togo and backed by the 54-nation African Union under the ‘Correct the Map’ campaign, the resolution seeks to rectify long-standing cartographic distortions that artificially inflated Northern Hemisphere countries while drastically shrinking equatorial regions like Africa and South America. Speaking at the assembly, Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey emphasised that maps shape global perception. While the Mercator map made Greenland appear equal in size to Africa, the new projection accurately reflects Africa's true scale, which is more than 14 times the size of Greenland. Despite sole opposition from the United States, which argued the UN should focus on active geopolitical crises, the non-binding resolution sets a new benchmark for global education and institutions.
