This Is Our Story | Episode 3: Kahrizak | Iran Protests
On 9 January 2026 — 19 Dey — people returned to the streets across Iran for the second day of the call to action. As the crackdown intensified, families began searching for those who never came home.The hope that had brought so many out the night before was still there, and once again large crowds gathered across the country. But as the protests continued, so did the crackdown. What followed left behind some of the most disturbing images of violence against protesters in Iran's recent history.
With the country under an internet blackout and much of what was happening hidden from the outside world, people used their phones to record what they saw. Their footage captured the scale and intensity of the crackdown on the streets, inside makeshift medical centres and hospitals, and in the hours that followed.
Then came the search for the missing. Families went from hospital to medical centre to morgue, looking for relatives who had gone out on 8 and 9 January and never returned. At Kahrizak, they were confronted with rows of bodies as they searched for their loved ones.
Episode Three brings together the footage Iranians recorded themselves. It is evidence, preserved on their phones, of what happened on the streets and of what families found when they went looking for those who did not come home.
About the series
Across four episodes, This Is Our Story brings together footage, testimonies and evidence from inside Iran to document protests and a violent crackdown that unfolded largely beyond the world's view.
