Why did one of the ancient world's largest urban civilizations abandon its great cities? Around 1900 BCE, the Indus Valley Civilization entered a period of de-urbanization. Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro, and other centres declined, long-distance trade weakened, and once-unified material culture fragmented into regional traditions. For generations, scholars blamed an Aryan invasion, climate change, shifting rivers, floods, earthquakes, or political upheaval. Yet the archaeological evidence tells a more complicated story. This video explores the Harappan world at its height, from its planned cities and industries to trade networks reaching Mesopotamia, Bahrain, Oman, Iran, and Afghanistan. It then follows the population eastward and into smaller settlements as environmental and economic pressures reshaped daily life. Were skeletons discovered at Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro proof of conquest? Did weakening monsoons and changing river systems destroy urban society? Or did the Indus Civilization survive by adapting? By examining climate records, settlement patterns, burials, agriculture, social storage, pastoralism, pottery, metallurgy, and cultural continuity, we challenge the idea of a sudden civilizational collapse. The cities faded, but their people did not disappear. What emerged was not total destruction, but a long transformation into resilient, localized cultures across ancient South Asia that carried Harappan traditions forward in surprising new forms.
