How to stop wasting clean energy | Tommi Eronen | TEDxLinz
NOTE FROM TED: TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/tedx_content_guidelines.pdfCould the energy of tomorrow be stored in sand? Tommi Eronen has spent the last decade racing to make this happen.
As extreme temperatures become more common, heating and cooling are no longer just about comfort. They are about safety and survival.
Today, about 40 percent of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions come from heating. At the same time, we are producing more clean electricity from wind and solar than ever before. The problem is timing. When we cannot use that energy right away, we often waste it.
Drawing on Finland’s experience with the Sand Battery, Tommi shows how sand-based thermal energy storage can store excess wind and solar power as heat for industries and district heating networks. The technology is simple, reliable, and built from common materials, yet its impact could be global.
Tommi Eronen is the CEO and Co-Founder of @Polar Night Energy [https://www.youtube.com/@polarnightenergy], the company behind Finland’s groundbreaking Sand Battery. An expert in heat transfer and storage modeling, he earned his Master of Science in Power Plant Engineering from Tampere University of Technology in 2017.
Driven by a passion for practical engineering solutions to the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, Tommi focuses on turning innovative ideas into real-world energy systems. Outside work, he is a passionate cyclist dreaming of a round-the-world trip and enjoys ice swimming and free diving.
