Héritée du Moyen Âge, cette psychiatrie hors les murs fait le pari qu’une vie ordinaire- un foyer, des liens sociaux, une place parmi les autres- peut aussi devenir une forme de soin.
Dans les Ardennes belges, à Lierneux, des patients psychiatriques vivent au sein de familles d’accueil, loin des unités fermées. Pour eux, les soins ne se limitent pas aux consultations ou aux traitements : ils se construisent aussi dans une cuisine, autour d’une table, dans les habitudes du quotidien familial. Ce modèle singulier trouve son origine au Moyen Âge, dans la ville flamande de Geel, où des habitants accueillaient déjà chez eux des personnes en souffrance psychique.
Le reportage suit des patients, une famille d’accueil et des soignants qui tentent ensemble de maintenir un équilibre fragile : offrir une liberté sans abandonner le soin. Car ici, les soins psychiatriques et la vie ordinaire s’entremêlent en permanence. Partager un repas, travailler la terre ou simplement avoir quelqu’un qui vous attend le soir deviennent autant de façons de faire face à la maladie et de vivre une vie épanouie. Mais cette unique alternative à l’hospitalisation psychiatrique vacille aujourd’hui face au manque de familles d’accueil volontaires et de moyens pour les accompagner.
