Donald Trump has bolstered his trade war with India — the US President has now imposed a $100,000 fee on the H-1B US Visa programme. Started in the 1990s, the H-1B programme allows US firms to hire skilled immigrant workers, such as I-T professionals, surgeons, financial experts etc. It offers up to 85,000 visas per year on a lottery system. Indians account for 71% of H-1B recipients, followed by China at 12%. Earlier, it used to cost $2,000-5,000, and the fee has now been raised manifold. So, Trump's move has sent shockwaves in the Indian job market, with New Delhi also reacting to it. In a statement, the Indian government reiterated that talent exchanges contributed to "economic growth and wealth creation" in both the US and India.So, why is Trump attacking the skilled immigrant workforce in America? Will raising the fee result in US companies preferring native talent over immigrants? And, what will it mean for Indian tech companies that highly depended on the H-1B visa programme?
