All'alba del 7 ottobre, shabbat e ultimo giorno della festività ebraica di Sukkot, Hamas lancia l'operazione 'Alluvione Al Aqsa'. Circa 3mila terroristi abbattono le recinzioni che dividono la Striscia di Gaza con lo Stato di Israele facendo irruzione nei kibbutz e nelle città vicine con auto, pick-up, motociclette e parapendii a motore.
Viene preso di mira anche il festival musicale 'Nova', dove erano radunati migliaia di giovani Contestualmente vengono lanciati oltre 5mila razzi verso Israele, dalle città del sud fino a Tel Aviv. Le forze armate dello Stato ebraico sono prese alla sprovvista e il bilancio è tragico: oltre 1200 morti e circa 250 rapiti presi in ostaggio e portati nella Striscia di Gaza. Israele richiama circa 300mila riservisti e lancia l'operazione 'Spade di ferro', iniziando a bombardare la Striscia e dando il via all'assedio che dura tuttora.
