The force exerted by an ideal spring is a conservative and obeys Hooke’s law. Applying the general equation for change in potential energy reveals that the elastic potential energy of a system containing an ideal spring is given by the following equation, where Δx is the distance the spring has been stretched or compressed from its equilibrium length: ΔU_s = ½k(Δx)^2. The elastic potential energy is zero when the spring is at its relaxed length.
