France is sending troops, radar systems and defence systems to Saudi Arabia to help protect the strategically important Yanbu energy hub on the Red Sea, as tensions escalate following fresh Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi territory.
Saudi Arabia said it intercepted six ballistic missiles aimed toward the Taif and Yanbu areas, while Yemen’s Houthis claimed attacks on targets in Riyadh and Saudi Aramco facilities in Yanbu. Saudi authorities had not immediately confirmed the Houthi claim regarding Riyadh.
But why is Yanbu so important?
Yanbu is a major Saudi oil-export and energy hub on the Red Sea and provides an alternative route for Saudi crude and petroleum products when shipments through the Strait of Hormuz face disruption. The growing Houthi presence along Yemen’s Red Sea coast and around the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait has therefore raised concerns over Saudi oil exports, maritime security and global energy supplies.
