Bolivia protests intensify as pressure mounts on President Rodrigo Paz
Violent clashes have erupted in Bolivia’s capital, La Paz, as protests against President Rodrigo Paz continue to grow.Miners marched through the streets using firecrackers and dynamite, while police responded with tear gas as soldiers guarded government buildings and blocked nearby roads. Demonstrators are demanding the president’s resignation amid worsening economic conditions and growing political divisions.
Over the past two weeks, protests have expanded nationwide, drawing teachers, indigenous groups, transport unions, farmers, and other sectors. Protesters are calling for higher wages, lower fuel prices, and an end to proposed privatization measures.
The government accuses demonstrators of escalating violence, while critics say security forces used excessive force after reports that one protester lost an eye during confrontations with police.
President Rodrigo Paz, elected just six months ago, is facing mounting pressure as Bolivia struggles with falling natural gas exports, fuel shortages, inflation, and a lack of foreign investment. Deepening divisions within his own government are adding to uncertainty over the country’s political future.
So, can Bolivia’s government contain the growing unrest? And how far could the economic crisis destabilize the country?
