Russia and India share a relationship that is rarely seen on the global stage. For 79 years, Moscow has given New Delhi the weapons it needed to fight and win wars. The partnership began right after India's Independence when then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru signed the deal for Mig-21 fighter jets with Russia. Prime Minister Nehru's daughter, Indira Gandhi, took the relationship even further, when she signed the India-Soviet Union Peace Treaty in 1971. Months later, India defeated Pakistan in the 1971 War, liberating Bangladesh from Pakistani army's genocide. During the war the Soviet Union supported India and even deployed its warships to deter America's USS Enterprise carrier strike group. Decades later, when Vladimir Putin became the President of Russia, he gave India crucial weapons, like the Su-30 MKI, Akula-class submarines, and the S-400 air-defence system, that was crucial in helping India defeat Pakistan. India and Russia are now taking that partnership further under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with S-500, BrahMos and Su-57 fighter jet deals on the cards.
