Can AI truly be alive? Can it possess spontaneity, or even “desire”? Artificial life researcher Takashi Ikegami explores the profound question of what it means for a machine to be “alive.”

Drawing on his work with the android Alter, Ikegami explains how integrating chaos theory and networks of large language models (LLMs) can give rise to spontaneous behavior and signs of self-awareness. At the heart of his work is a striking idea: the mind and autonomy do not emerge in isolation, but rather “come from outside,” taking shape through continuous interaction with people and the environment.

Ikegami also explores the role of art as a radically different approach to science and technology, one that can help steer them away from destructive ends such as war. He introduces Scary Beauty, an android opera created by composer and artist Keiichiro Shibuya, in which Alter conducts a human orchestra.

Ultimately, Ikegami invites us to see AI not as a threat to human intelligence, but as a partner that can challenge us to update our values and help us co-create a new society.

Takashi Ikegami is a researcher in artificial life and complex systems whose work spans
open-ended evolution, emergence, and the philosophy of mind. He directs AISAC at Atomi University, is Project Professor at the University of Tokyo, and is Chief Science Officer at Alternative Machine Inc. He developed the ALTER3 humanoid and the Concurrent Modular Agent architecture, and proposes Community First Theory that individual agency is constituted by collective organization. His work moves between science and art, including installations at the Venice Biennale with Luc Steels. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me

TubeReader video aggregator is a website that collects and organizes online videos from the YouTube source. Video aggregation is done for different purposes, and TubeReader take different approaches to achieve their purpose.

Our try to collect videos of high quality or interest for visitors to view; the collection may be made by editors or may be based on community votes.

Another method is to base the collection on those videos most viewed, either at the aggregator site or at various popular video hosting sites.

TubeReader site exists to allow users to collect their own sets of videos, for personal use as well as for browsing and viewing by others; TubeReader can develop online communities around video sharing.

Our site allow users to create a personalized video playlist, for personal use as well as for browsing and viewing by others.

What is YouTube?

YouTube is a free video sharing website that makes it easy to watch online videos. You can even create and upload your own videos to share with others. Originally created in 2005, YouTube is now one of the most popular sites on the Web, with visitors watching around 6 billion hours of video every month.
