Political tensions have been running high in Cameroon as the official results of the October 12 presidential election are awaited on October 27. The election has pitted 92-year-old incumbent President Paul Biya against his former ally and now top rival, Issa Tchiroma Bakary. Tchiroma has vigorously contested the results, claiming victory with an alleged 54.8 per cent of the vote against Biya’s purported 31.3 per cent, and has warned that he will not accept any other outcome. Following the country's poll body declaring President Biya a provisional winner with reportedly securing over 53 per cent of the vote—setting him up for an eighth term—Tchiroma has called on his supporters to protest if the official results are not in his favour, citing widespread "falsification and ballot stuffing." However, Cameroon's constitutional council has dismissed all petitions contesting the polls.---
