Ukraine has secured U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from Greece from December until March 2026 to cover its winter needs, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Sunday (November 16). The deal was signed between Greek gas company DEPA and Ukraine's Naftogaz during Zelenskiy's visit to Athens. Ukraine has resumed gas imports from a pipeline that runs across the Balkan peninsula to Greece to secure winter supplies after Russia stepped up strikes on power generation, electricity and gas production facilities in the fourth year of its war on Ukraine. "To compensate for the destruction of our own production by the Russians, our agreements with Greece today are an important part of the large energy package that we have prepared for this winter to provide Ukraine with gas," Zelenskiy said alongside Mitsotakis on Sunday before he travels next to France and Spain. Sunday's deal comes after Athens this month clinched its first long-term deal to supply U.S. LNG to Europe starting in 2030 after the European Union approved a ban on Russian LNG from 2027 over its war in Ukraine. Mitsotakis told the joint news conference with Zelenskiy that the agreement will also help stop Russian natural gas from entering Europe.---
