Ausführlich sprechen wir auch über die Vergangenheit, die den Balkan bis heute prägt. Denn: Ende August ist der verurteilte Kriegsverbrecher Ratko Mladic gestorben. Er war Oberbefehlshaber der bosnisch-serbischen Armee während des Bosnienkrieges. Er war mitverantwortlich für die mehrjährige Belagerung von Sarajevo und das Massaker von Srebrenica. Bühler war selbst viel auf dem Balkan im Einsatz. Er kennt die jahrhundertelange Geschichte, die diese Region zu dem komplizierten Gebilde gemacht hat, das es bis heute ist. Er erzählt auch, wie es zum Bosnienkrieg kam und wer dabei gegen wen kämpfte.
