Алексей Рудаков, советский летчик, должен сопровождать важный груз. Близкие друзья, сослуживцы капитана, погибают во время выполнения миссии. На борту не оказывается ничего важного. Рудаков попадает под трибунал.Второй секретарь Обкома партии Кежаев, считает, что груз был куда важнее летчиков. Рудакова спасает начальник штаба фронта — по его приказу лётчик Рудаков должен выполнить новое задание.
Он должен совершить полёт в тыл врага, с целью найти важную информацию про расположение немецких солдат. Рудаков подчиняется, понимая, что шансы выжить у него невелики.
