Can I Grow 100 Year Old Tomato Seeds?
I came across an old packet of free tomato seeds in a 1926 Stark Bro's Seeds catalogue. This variety seemed to be exclusive to Stark Bro's at the time and they named it "Stark's Blight Resister". I believe this to be a blight and wilt-resistant variety of the Norton tomato, in which the Norton tomato itself was a wilt-resistant variety of the earlier Stone tomato.I am sure seeds for this variety exists somewhere else on this planet, but I could not find any source for it, so I took this experiment fairly seriously, just in case I was the only person in the whole universe with this old seed sample pack.
After some research and discussion with peers in my plant science field, it seemed like most tomato seed viability is lost after ~10 years, but outliers do exist and anything is possible under the right conditions. This was a really fun project and I wish I could come across things like this more often.
